4 More Elements to Telling an Attention-Grabbing Story
In our last post, we illustrated 5 key story elements with these opening application essay lines: The moment I found the lump, I suspected my life was about to change ââ¬â in a big way. It was mid-May 2011. I was a busy consultant in McKinseyââ¬â¢s Chicago office, the proud father of a boy about to turn one, and a generally happy guy in his mid-20s. It was tempting to wish the lump would just go away, and for a few days that was my strategy. I didnââ¬â¢t even tell my wife. But soon I recognized that knowledge is power, and made an appointment with my doctor. Within a week I had a diagnosis: cancer. These seven lines contain the first 5 of our important story elements: â⬠¢ Storytelling element #1: A killer opening ââ¬â entering the story in the middle of an intense scene â⬠¢ Storytelling element #2: Context ââ¬â mid-20s consultant, Chicago, 2011 â⬠¢ Storytelling element #3: Stakes ââ¬â life and death â⬠¢ Storytelling element #4: Obstacles ââ¬â cancer â⬠¢ Storytelling element #5: Character ââ¬â fear and determination You should include these key elements in all your story-based essays. Note that this does not mean your stories need to be as life changing as the one in our example; weââ¬â¢re talking about structure and storytelling technique here. And now weââ¬â¢ll jump into the next 4 of our key storytelling elements: Storytelling element #6: Adding a twist So what happens next in our tale? (Incidentally, a well-told story uses these elements to make readers ask that question again and again, pulling them through the story.) Once I got past the initial shock, I discovered an unexpected challenge: choosing among major surgery, two rounds of chemotherapy, and ââ¬Å"surveillanceâ⬠(i.e., regular testing to see if the cancer was spreading). The options had the exact same survival rate (very high), but very different side-effect profiles. For example, the surgery was associated with potential nerve damage, while the chemo could have resulted in lower lung capacity. This part of our story includes a twist and further obstacles. Twists, or surprise turns in stories ââ¬â in this case, the challenge of choosing treatment ââ¬â are not essential for grad school essays, but they can certainly make them more engaging: a teammate with a secret, a clientââ¬â¢s abrupt shift in expectations, etc. In this story, the unexpected challenge also represented an obstacle, in that our courageous subject had to choose from three very different treatments with similar levels of effectiveness. Storytelling element #7: Detailing the process Hereââ¬â¢s what happened next: It was time for some deep research: with my wifeââ¬â¢s help and inputs from my oncologist and other doctors, I pored over journal articles and other materials to understand my treatment options and their risks. For example, we learned that the surveillance course could take over five years before one could consider themselves cancer-free. Here we have more evidence of character (how our guy took a methodical approach, rather than just picking a treatment impulsively or based on one doctorââ¬â¢s opinion), along with process, or the exact steps he took to approach the obstacle. Too many applicants leave out their process, skipping from ââ¬Å"My team faced several major hurdlesâ⬠to ââ¬Å"The client loved our solution, and I got a raise.â⬠You need to tell the adcom what you did, how you did it, and ideally how you engaged others to overcome the challenge as well. Even our cancer story here includes a team element (the wife and doctors). Storytelling elements #8 and #9: Sharing the outcome AND Talking about lessons learned After weeks of research and deliberation, I opted for two rounds of outpatient chemotherapy. I said goodbye to my hair and hello to needles and nausea. The first week went well. But as I neared the second, my doctor called: the chemo had pushed my white blood cell count too low, compromising my immune system. I would have to wait. For two weeks I avoided raw fruit and vegetables and stayed inside as much as possible. My white blood cell count rose, and I completed the second week of chemo. Now, over eight years later, Iââ¬â¢m considered cured, a survivor. The only physical residue of my treatment is slightly wavier hair. But the experience reinforced the importance of a proactive approach (I found out most men wait over six months to get lumps checked), of careful due diligence in health and other matters, and of never giving up. I carry those lessons into everything I do. So I was right: the lump changed my life in a big way; but I never could have guessed how positive those changes would be. The last part of our story brings more process (how our survivor made a decision) and another twist (his low white blood cell count), along with the outcome and lessons learned. These last two elements typically tie together: the outcome (surviving cancer) reinforced multiple lessons, as noted above. Itââ¬â¢s easy to spend too little (i.e., none) or too much (i.e., paragraphs) time on lessons learned; generally 1-3 lines gets the job done. Itââ¬â¢s also always recommended to wrap up your story by returning to your opening, to end with a killer ending with a broader theme or key realization or glimpse of the future. BUS 310 Notes regarding Two-Sample t-Tests and ANOVAs In Chapter 9, we learned how to conduct a t test of a hypothesis when we were testing the mean of a single sample group against some pre-determined value (i.e., the 21.6 gallons of milk consumption as the national average). This week, in Chapter 10, we will see how to test hypotheses that involve more than one sample groupââ¬âsuch as testing to see if males are significantly taller than females. If we have two groups, then the technique that we will use will still be a t test. If we have more than two groups, then we will have to use a different test called Analysis of Variance (ANOVA, for short). Forest Ecosystem and Biodiversity Definitions
A forest ecosystem is the basic ecologic unit in a particular forest that exists as home for a community of both native and introduced classified organisms.à Aà forest ecosystem isà named for the primary tree species that form the canopy. It is definedà by all the collective living inhabitants of that forest ecosystem that co-exist together in symbiosis to create a unique ecology.à In other words, a forest ecosystem is typically associated with land masses covered in trees and those trees are oftenà classified by foresters intoà forest cover types. Examples of just a fewà broad names in North America are The northern hardwood ecosystem, the ponderosa pine ecosystem, the bottomland hardwoodà forest ecosystem, the jack pine forest ecosystem and so on. The forest ecosystem is just one of a number of unique ecosystems including prairies, deserts, polar regions, and great oceans, smaller lakes, and rivers. Forest Ecology and Biodiversity The word ecology comes from the Greek oikos, meaning household or place to live. These ecosystems or communities are usually self-sustaining. The word usually is used because some of these communities can become unbalanced very quickly when detrimental factors occur. Some ecosystems, like tundra, coral reefs, wetlands, and grasslands are very fragile and very small changes can affect their health. Larger ecosystems with wide diversity are much more stable and somewhat resistant to harmful changes. A forest ecosystem community is directly related to species diversity. Generally, you can assume that the more complex the structure, the greater is its species diversity. You should remember that a forest community is much more than just the sum of its trees. A forest is a system that supports interacting units including trees, soil, insects, animals, and man. How a Forest Ecosystem Matures Forest ecosystems tend to always be moving toward maturity or into what foresters call a climax forest. This maturing, also called forest succession, of the ecosystem increases diversity up to the point of old age where the system slowly collapses. One forestry example of this is the growth of trees and the entire system movingà toward an old growth forest. When an ecosystem is exploited and exploitation is maintained or when components of the forest begin to naturally die, then that maturing forest ecosystem goes into declining tree health. Management of forests for sustainability is desirable when forest diversity is threatened by overuse, resource exploitation, old age, and poor management. Forest ecosystems can be disrupted and harmed when not properly sustained. A sustained forest that is certified by a qualified certification program gives some assurance that the forest is managed to allow maximum diversity while satisfying the managers environmental and economic demands. Scientists and foresters have dedicated their entire careers trying to understand even a small part of forest ecosystems. Complex forest ecosystems are extremely diverse, ranging from dry desert shrub land to large temperate rain forests. These natural resource professionals have categorized forest ecosystems in North America by placing them into forest biomes. Forest biomes are broad categories of natural tree/plant communities.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - 1052 Words
Franz Kafka wrote one of his most popular books, The Metamorphosis, during the literary period and movement of existentialism. His novella stresses many existential ideals. The most predominant ideal that is seen through Gregor Samsa and his father in The Metamorphosis is that choice is the opportune of the individual. Oneââ¬â¢s ultimate goal in life is to successfully find a balance between work and leisure. It is through the juxtaposition of Gregor Samsa and his father, the conceding tone of the author, and the choice of diction that we see the acquisition of the homeostasis between work and leisure and in turn this exemplifies the father of Gregor as an existential ideal. Franz Kafka was born on July 3, 1883 in Prague, Austria-Hungary (now known as the Czech Republic). He was a German speaking child in a Jewish society. From a very young age he suffered with many instances of isolationism, tragedy ran rampant in his home with the death of his two younger brothers during birth, and he had a profound relationship with his parents (Kafkaââ¬â¢s Life). Franz Kafka referred to his father as a ââ¬Å"true Kafkaâ⬠and his fatherââ¬â¢s relationship paved the way for many of his writings and ideals. The Film Kony 2012 and Invisible Children - 3099 Words
Introduction Kony 2012 was a film produced Invisible Children which went viral overnight. The video gained 31 million views in a single day and since has gathered almost over 99 million view on YouTube. The campaign was a 30-minute video made by filmmaker and Invisible Children co-founder Jason Russell can be considered a political documentary by traditional standards. The political documentary intended to persuade bystander viewers to hold certain beliefs about Kony, a leader of the rebel militia group the Lordââ¬â¢s Resistance Army in Uganda. Viewers were asked to act immediately to raise awareness through social media, local campaigns and political advocacy to capture the rebel leader who kidnapped children. They didnââ¬â¢t care that their clothes werenââ¬â¢t as expensive or new, they were just grateful that they were with friends that cared for them and would help them out in their time of need, and family that would risk anything just to make them safe and happy. They might not have gotten the riches or money, but since they were alive and with loved ones, they relished what they had and were truly content. What cartoons did you watch or books did you read? I had chosen to assess whether childrens media is gender-stereotyped by watching various episodes of The Flintstones from the ABC televison station. 2. Are male and female characters portrayed in gender-stereotypic roles? Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones. As the song entails, the Flintstones were in fact your modern Stone Age family. This 1960s American sitcom had placed an emphasis on four leading characters each of which are portrayed in gender-stereotypic roles. Starting ith the main character, Fred Flintstone is an accident-prone quarry worker and head of the Flintstone clan. He is quick to anger, but a very loving husband and father. Wilma Flintstone, who is Freds fiery, red-haired wife, is portrayed as being the more intelligent of the two as well as more level headed than her husband. The Flintstones best friends and next door neighbors are The Rubbles, Barney and Betty. Both the men and women in The Flintstones were drawn with the same body shape and type of clothing. The two main female characters, Wilma and Betty are both drawn very thin, with tiny waists, thin legs and medium busts. The two women are always dressed in short fitted dresses and accessorized each with a large necklace. The women always wear their hair in the same style and it never appears to be unwashed or disheveled in any way. Being that both the women along with men are emphasized as modern day cave people, they are never shown wearing shoes. This shows that both of the women are drawn with very tiny feet suiting well to the ideal body type of any woman. The two main male characters, Fred and Barney are both seen as somewhat stout, with an insignificant amount of muscle in their chest and upper body areas. Fred and Barney are each characterized by having minimally pronounced waists, in what could be termed a slight beer belly. Both have the same short, conservative haircut which appears to be shaggy and un- groomed. They are dressed in a primitive cloth which is relatively unflattering to their bulky body type. 3. Are males and females equally represented in exciting plot I do not believe that males and females are equally represented in The activities? Flintstones. Unlike Wilma and Betty, whose sole occupation was raising their two children Pebbles, and the later adopted Bamm Bamm as well as being domesticated ousewives, Fred and Barney were employed at the Slate Rock/Gravel Quarry. It is here, where they performed everyday masculine tasks serving as dinosaur operators which entailed them to the lifting and transporting of heavy materials, a Job deemed as unsuitable (at the time) for any woman. The two men are also members of the Rock Quarrys men-only bowling team known as the Flintstone Flyer. On a regular basis, Fred and Barney arrive home after a hard day of work in a stone-age vehicle with stone wheels and a fringe on top. The two women are rarely seen driving he vehicle which puts emphasis on the gender stereotype that women rely on men for transportation amongst many other things at that present time. Barney and Fred men-only club paralleling real-life fraternities such as the Freemasons. Organizations which allowed women only memberships were minimal and not really emphasized at this time. Both married couples are often depicted as sleeping in separate beds from their spouses which was a popular trend for the majority of television sitcoms during the mid 1960s. 4. Do the male characters outnumber the female characters? After viewing several episodes of The Flintstones, my results have indicated a definite discrepancy between the numbers of male to female characters portrayed. As with most other 1960s television sitcoms, men were deemed as more active in society and the women were more passive. An individual with a more minor role, such as Mr. Slate whose was Fred and Barneys employer, was played by a male along with the rest of their Slate Rock/Stone Quarry coworkers. Organizations in which the men were members such as the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes and The Flintstone Flyer (Freds bowling team) also consisted of men only which is yet another indication that male characters outnumber the females by a fairly large amount. Based on my observation of male to female characters, it appears that there is a ratio of about 4 to 1 with men being more favorable. 5. Are the behaviors, attitudes, and characteristics of male and female characters strongly gender stereotyped? Yes. Starting with the attitudes of both the men and woman characters, it appears that Fred tends to be loud-mouthed, aggressive, and constantly scheming ways to improve his familys orking class lot in life, often with unintended results. The women of this cartoon are rarely seen raising their voices to their spouse, or promoting physical or verbal abuse of any kind. Due to his impulsive and short-tempered behavior and stubborn and naive nature, Fred Flintstone seems to be accident-prone. He is able to create the biggest confusion, even with the most innocent and mundane action. Despite his apparently anti-social character, Freds actions are shown to be usually free of any malice. And, although he almost constantly shouts and aggravates the people around imself, Fred proves to be a friendly person; often going out of his way to help Although Fred often annoys Wilma with his immaturity, he proves to be someone. a very caring and loving husband and father. Fred Flintstone is even known to go to great lengths to please his family or apologize when he goes too far. Barney tended to be much more Jovial-minded and easygoing than his friend Fred. He would go along with Freds get rich quick schemes along with many other absent minded ideas rarely losing his patience because the two were best friends. This is evidence that ale characters are portrayed as having a more aggressive role than the women who were more quiet and reserved. Also, it was clear that based on both the attitudes and behaviors of the men, that they were the head of the household and had the overall say in the relationship which is still remains evident in some marriages today. Based on behaviors and attitudes alike, many episodes also depict characteristics which are shown only by the women. Household chores such as vacuuming, cooking, and being the dominant caregiver for the children, were roles in which only the women portrayed. The women also were also known for their love for shopping, and (occasionally) getting to meet the celebrities of their world, including Stony Curtis and Cary Granite as well. 6. Are recent books and cartoons less gender-stereotyped than ones from a decade or more ago?
